Problems Caused By a Malfunctioning Alternator

A malfunctioning alternator can cause the engine control unit to turn on the battery light on the dashboard. This is a sign that the alternator is going bad and needs to be replaced. As an aside, it can also be a sign that the battery is going bad. If the alternator is the problem, you will also have one or more of the following issues discussed below.

Dead Battery

A dead battery can be caused by a faulty alternator because the alternator is the electrical system part that keeps the battery charged. Unfortunately, if the alternator is not providing a constant charge to the battery, it will discharge until it dies. As such, you will be left with the need to jump-start the battery frequently in order to get your vehicle started.

Dim Lights

Another sign that the alternator is suffering is dim headlights, interior lights, and taillights. In addition, your vehicle lights make flicker. This is an indication that the alternator is either providing too little or too much power to the vehicle’s lights. In addition to the alternator, a dying battery can also create problems with the lights, especially their brightness.

Growling Sounds

The alternator may opt to let you know that there is a problem by making noise in the engine. The alternator is located near the front of the engine, so this is from where the noise will come. Usually, the alternator growls or grinds because its interior mechanisms are wearing down. As an aside, the bill to which it is attached can also whine.

Misfiring/Stalling

Aside from supplying power to your vehicle’s lights, the alternator also provides power to the spark plugs. This is what enables them to produce sparks in the combustion chamber to get your car started and keep it running. Unfortunately, if the alternator is going bad, it may be unable to supply the plugs with the power they need. Consequently, your engine will misfire and stall.

Slow Accessories

Finally, if the alternator is going bad, you may start to have problems with your vehicle’s accessories. Power accessories may slow down and things such as your touchscreen and navigation system may start to malfunction. This is a sign that they are not getting enough electricity in order to operate the way they should be. Replacing the alternator will resolve the problem.
